Otis Campervan Remodel
Work Completed
For this project, our clients wanted to remodel their older campervan to make it more comfortable and usable on their camping adventures. Their campervan had a full size bed at the rear of the van that could be converted between a bed and a dinette area. They had a few issues with this setup. One, they did not really use the dinette area because they preferred to cook and eat outside. Two, because the bed was made up of multiple cushions put together from the dinette configuration, they found it uncomfortable to sleep on. Three, the full size bed was too small for both of them to sleep in comfortably so the husband slept in the pop-top bed. Improvements made to the trailer include the following:

Removed some of the cabinets to enlarge the area for the bed.
Built a fixed, queen size bed frame to replace the full size, convertible bed. The frame was constructed from metal for rigidity and wooden slats were used for comfort and ventilation.
8” memory foam mattress installed.

On the driver side of the van, the fridge cabinet and one of the storage cabinets were kept. One storage closet was removed to make space for the new queen bed.
Magnetic locks were installed on cabinet doors to prevent them from opening while driving.
On the passenger side of the van, the sink and cooktop were removed, and the countertop was replaced. The pop-up countertop was also replaced.

A new 12 Vdc refrigerator (Indel B CR 130) was installed to replace the old fridge. The old fridge had stopped working properly.
A new 12 Vdc fan was installed to replace the old one. The old fan was very loud and kept the wife awake at night. The new fan was much quieter and included an adjustable speed dial.

The gallery below shows the campervan when we received it from our client. The bed in the back was a full size bed that could be converted between a dinette area and a bed. Our clients didn’t use the sink or cooktop in the kitchen area because they preferred cooking and eating their meals outside. The noise of the fan kept the wife from sleeping soundly at night. However, turning it off made the area get too warm for comfort. The existing 12 Vdc refrigerator no longer kept food cold.
